Every ten minutes, another child or adult is expected to die from leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma. This statistic represents nearly 145 people each day, or six people every hour.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society continues its commitment to provide a wide array of high quality, comprehensive services to our patients and their families.  Across the United States in the past year, LLS made contact with more than seven million patients and families in need of help.  Locally, the National Capital Area Chapter provided these ongoing Patient Services at no cost to the individual in need:

  • $879,848 in co-pay assistance to 381 local patients to assist with the extraordinary costs of blood cancer medication and treatments
  • $17,300 in financial aid to 173 local blood cancer patients to offset the cost of micellaneous and unexpected expenses related to cancer treatment
  • $125,500 in financial aid to 1,255 blood cancer patients in the tri-state area of Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia
  • 21 education programs, attended by 724 local patients and healthcare professionals
  • 82 family support groups offering peer and professional support to 659 survivors and family members
  • 107 "First Connections" made through a peer support group which brings together survivors and newly diagnosed patients

HOW FAR WILL YOU GO TO SUPPORT LOCAL SERVICES?

  • $25 provides a disease-specific educational booklet, information on the Society’s services, and a binder for a patient to keep track of oncology appointments & medical history.
  • $80 funds one patient or caregiver’s participation in a support group for an entire year.
  • $150 provides 10 patients access to an informational teleconference about their specific blood cancer.
  • $300 trains 25 peer volunteers who can provide emotional support to newly diagnosed patients.
  • $400 provides 40 teachers with an educational Pediatric Instruction Manual to assist a child with cancer returning to school after treatment.
  • $500 provides a patient with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma with Patient Aid to support their medical treatment and travel to medical appointments for one year.
  • $800 provides a monthly Family Support Group Program for one year for 10 patients.
  • $900 educates a district of 200 school nurses about the needs of children returning to school after cancer treatment.
  • $1050 provides materials for 50 hospitals and clinics to participate in Blood Cancer Awareness Month, making updated educational materials readily available to patients.
  • $3500 funds a program to educate 70 nurses on emerging treatments for a specific blood cancer.
  • $7000 funds a program to educate 200 doctors on emerging treatments for a specific blood cancer.
  • $8000 provides a half-day conference with free materials for 100 parents, school nurses, teachers, and guidance counselors to learn practical suggestions on how to educate children with cancer.

On behalf of our patients and their families, thank you for your generous donation and for supporting The Brian Orakpo Leukemia Golf Classic.
